Workshop on “Damper Pedal and Sound Alchemy in the Context of Interpretation" ~ Enrico Elisi
How often do our intermediate students take the damper pedal for granted? Why do their instinctive reactions based on nearly automatic, acoustic feedback provide limited results? This workshop will focus on the damper pedal in the context of interpretation. A few examples will reveal how the composition’s horizontal aim—its “future”—and vertical conception—its ”present”—are part of an all-inclusive, temporal context from which some thoughtful considerations on pedaling may be derived.

Enrico Elisi will teach a master class, give a lecture, and perform at the 2nd Grumo Festival in Apulia, Italy. The festival will take place in Grumo Appula and Binetto, July 5 to July 10, 2010 and will offer lessons, a series of lectures and studio classes, and evening concerts in venues such as the beautiful Chiostro del Comune, the main square in Grumo Appula, the Centro Studi Musicali, or the magnificent Largo Chiesa in Binetto. Instructors for 2010 are highly qualified professional musicians, artist performers, and university faculty from Italy, Poland, and the United States. Many attractions are available nearby, from the Castellana Caves to marvelous Mediterranean beaches, from the UNESCO protected heritage site of Alberobello with its unique Trulli, to the thirteenth century Castel del Monte, with its octagonal shape.

January 4-16, Banff Centre of Performing Arts - Creative Winter Residency/Recitals.
Elisi was in residence at the Banff Centre for the Performing Arts. His project culminated in two solo public performances with music by Bach and Mozart, as well as a professional studio recording project, which will focus on selected works of W. A. Mozart (three sonatas and short pieces). The Banff Centre is a globally respected and outstanding arts, cultural, and educational institution that hosts summer music programs, audio programs, the ANET II (High Quality Audio over Networks Summit), the well-known Banff String Quartet Competition, the International Trumpet Guild Conference, as well as a Jazz program. For over 70 years of distinguished history, the Centre has provided professional career development for artists and cultural leaders in performing, literary, new media, and visual arts. The Centre is also recognized as an international elite point of reference of music-making: since 1936, over 6,000 artists have taken part in music and audio programs.

Enrico Elisi adjudicates the Dorothy Sutton Performance Festival.Auditions will be held, in the new Swope Hall, West Chester University from 1:30 PM–6:30 PM.Teachers may refer to the PMTA website for guidelines and entry forms. Students are required to play two compositions. The music for the elementary should be contrasting in style. No arranged music. Intermediate and advanced levels should be from two different periods of music history. Performance time may not exceed fifteen minutes. In addition, all students are required to take a theory exam by 5:00 on the day of the audition. Theory test information is located on the PMTA website under Dorothy Sutton Performance Festival.

Adjudicator of the Penn State University Marjorie Jane Brewster Memorial Music Scholarship Competition. Scholarships were created in memory of Marjorie Jane Brewster (’61 B.A. Arts) by her father, the late R. Wallace Brewster (’28 B.A. Arts and Letters and ’30 M.A. Political Science). Consideration is given to full-time students who are graduates of Penn State with pursuit of advanced music studies at an accredited institution of higher learning or accredited conservatory of music of their choice. This scholarship is a competitive merit-based award.

Jeannette "Ann" Keller, founder of the Nittany Valley Symphony, Concertmistress of both NVS and Altoona Symphony for many years, passed away Saturday July 3, 1999. She was 82 years old. Her active spirit evoked the yearly NVS award in her name, The "Ann Keller Young Soloist Competition."

The present recording session will be broadcast on WPSU Television in spring 2009. This initiative is part of the Second Annual "Moments of Change" - a multi-disciplinary initiative that will explore the twenty-five-year period at the turn of the 20th century, from the highly influential World Fair in Paris in 1889 to the outbreak of World War One in 1914. On this occasion, Enrico Elisi will perform works by Albeniz, Falla, and Respighi. This idea was made possible by the Institute for the Arts and Humanities, at Penn State University.
